But have you taken advantage of your Massage Therapy Coverage?
Most Canadians are unaware of the fact that their medical insurance through their spouse, employer, or parents may cover them for massage therapy. Almost all insurance plans cover a maximum amount within a set period of time which is typically a year. It means, unless you upgrade your plan, you might have to pay out of your own pocket if you exceed the number of sessions/amount stated in your insurance policy. However, it also means you are wasting your coverage if you haven’t used it at all.

Know your Coverage!

When referring to massage therapy in the context of insurance coverage, massage has to be performed by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT). Not every insurance plan will cover the entire cost of massage therapy. In many cases, only a certain percentage will be covered. It is important to talk to your insurance provider before using it to avoid any surprises and to know how your coverage works.

Employee benefits and individual health insurance plans are the two main types of private health insurance in Canada.

  1. Employee Benefits Coverage for Massage Therapy

Employee benefits are also called “group insurance” and the coverage is obtained by the employers. There will be a loss of benefits if you lose your job. It is categorized under “paramedical” benefits which includes services like physiotherapy, chiropractic physiotherapy, naturopaths and speech therapy. There is usually no “per visit” maximum unlike individual health insurance plans. Coverage is limited by annual plan maximums that are applied to each type of paramedical coverage (e.g. one maximum per coverage type).

  1. Individual Health Insurance for Massage Therapy

Individual health insurance is also called “family health insurance” or “personal Health insurance”. It is obtained by an individual and not via an employer. Coverage will stay until premiums are being paid. Like group insurances, massage therapy is also categorised under paramedical benefit. They usually have “per visit” maximums that is around $20 applied to all benefits lumped together. They also have a maximum number of visits annually. Most individual health plans require a doctor’s referral for massage therapy.
